Before the change of regime legal debates of economic organizations fell under the authority of regional councils of arbitration.
From January 1, 1973 economic cases were transferred to the courts. County (metropolitan) courts had a general authority within the scope of which economic cases belonged to the newly set up economic department. The Economic Department of the Budapest Metropolitan Court was subdivided into specialized groups to which cases where the amount claimed is higher than 10 million HUF belong. This way local courts operating in the seats of county courts became courts possesing general competence.

It was in 1992 when the Economic Department moved into its present place. Judges who deal with proceedings and also those who deal with liquidation work in the building. In 1998, registry judges were also transferred from the Civil Department to the Economic Department.

The Economic Department of the Budapest Metropolitan Court plays an outstanding role in economic litigation. The judges of the Economic Department deal with several complicated cases that are accompanied by great public interest.
